Of Parrots and Prozac

This sad article is posted on today's (December 10, 2008) United Kingdom Daily Mail Online about prozac prescribed parrots.

Yes, it's sad to use such drugs as a wholesale, one size fits all "fix."

However, it has been shown to be highly effective for some birds and other animals. But only as last resorts.

This particular parrot may have stopped plucking had he had more human attention and love to help him with his grief -- just like humans benefit from attention and love. I don't think the article said how long it had been since the bird lost his human, but time helps a lot, too.

I just hope Prozac was used in this instance as a last-ditch effort.
